Across From Scarsdale Station, the New Shops Keep Arriving in Pairs

October 22, 2026

Walk off the Manhattan-bound platform and cross toward the village. Within about a block you pass two wine shops, two Italian dining rooms and a family-run coffee counter. A national coffee chain has applied for signage at the corner across the street. The old Bank of America on Christie Place has two new tenants lined up, and the old Zachys building on East Parkway now serves steak.

Over 2026, the stretch of East Parkway, Christie Place and Spencer Place across from the Metro-North station has filled up in an unusual way. Nearly every new arrival has opened within sight of a business doing the same thing. For anyone who already runs errands here, the blocks by the station now offer a choice between two of most things, and each one is working hard to be the one you pick.

Coffee: a family counter, a chain on the corner, and the platform Starbucks

Dante's Lattes opened at 58A Christie Place this spring. Dante Ventura runs it with his wife, Yasmilka Ventura, and his brother, Juan Ventura. Dante spent a decade as a barista at Ground Central Coffee Company and For Five Coffee Roasters in New York City. The menu runs from traditional espresso drinks to a cold foam cinnamon bun latte, plus tea, avocado toast and fresh pastries. Bronxville Beacon reported hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Steps away, Caffè Nero is coming to the corner of Christie Place and East Parkway. It will be the UK chain's first café in Westchester County. In August, Scarsdale's Board of Architectural Review took up the café's signage application, filed by Christie Place LLC. That review covered signs only and did not amount to final approval to open. When the Village Board discussed the plans in July, Scarsdale10583 reported planned hours of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The café had no announced opening date in early October.

Then there's Starbucks, already open down the street at the train station. When The Journal News asked Ventura about the chain café coming to his corner, he said he was "not worried at all." Once Caffè Nero opens, a commuter will pass three espresso machines between the platform and Spencer Place, and each one keeps different hours.

Wine: a move of a few hundred feet that went to court

With wine, the pairing ended up in a courtroom.

Scarsdale Wine Merchants used to sit at 2 Depot Place, on the Manhattan-bound side of the tracks. When its landlord declined to renew the lease, the business asked the State Liquor Authority in April for permission to move across the tracks to 30 East Parkway. That spot is across the street from the station. The SLA approved the move on June 16.

Scarsdale Wine & Spirits, at 1 Christie Place about a block from the station, had objected during the SLA process. On Aug. 13 it petitioned Westchester Supreme Court to overturn the approval. According to Westfair Online, the petition argued the move would add to "an already saturated retail liquor market in the surrounding area." The relocating shop argued it was moving its storefront a few hundred feet to serve the same commuters and neighborhood customers. It also said the four closest liquor stores would be the same before and after the move. The two shops have nearly identical names, which doesn't help anyone keep them straight.

The move went ahead while the case was pending. By late September, Scarsdale Wine Merchants was open in its larger East Parkway space, with weekend tastings planned. Bronxville Beacon reported on Oct. 2 that the outcome of the court case had not been made public. It listed the store's hours as 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The new storefront also brings back an old pattern. It sits a few doors from the former home of Zachys, the longtime Scarsdale wine institution that moved to Port Chester during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wine is back on that block of East Parkway, and another shop is a block away.

Italian: the old Zachys building and the old Akai, a few doors apart

The Zachys building itself became One Rare Italian Steakhouse at 16 East Parkway, which opened in January 2023.

This September a second Italian dining room arrived around the corner. Capretta, a modern Italian restaurant from Z Hospitality Group, opened at 57 Spencer Place in the space that used to be Akai Japanese restaurant. Dinner service started Sept. 15. On Sept. 22, Mayor Justin Arest, Deputy Mayor Dara Gruenberg and Trustee Tim Foley cut the ribbon, and lunch service began that day. The Journal News was first to report the opening.

Capretta is the group's eighth restaurant. Z Hospitality started in 1991 with Terra in Greenwich, and it also runs Aurora in Rye. Its menu has handmade pastas, wood-fired meatballs with whipped ricotta, butterflied branzino, Parmesan-crusted West Coast halibut, and both Detroit-style and regular pizzas. Dinner runs 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, until 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and until 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The phone number is 914-202-6900. Scarsdale10583 called it "an instant hit."

Zachys' departure runs through two of these pairs. Its old building now holds the steakhouse that Capretta opened near. Its old customers now have two wine shops a block apart to choose from.

100 Christie Place: the old bank fills up

The one new arrival without an obvious twin nearby is going into the former Bank of America space. At its Sept. 22 meeting, the Village Board gave Core Burn Pilates permission to open a 1,539-square-foot studio at 100 Christie Place. The studio's website is selling pre-opening packages, and its first round has already sold out. The booking calendar shows classes starting Monday, Nov. 2. The studio's number is 914-844-6867.

Caffè Nero's signage application also lists the 100 Christie Place address. So the building that used to hold a bank branch is lined up to serve espresso at one end and Pilates at the other.

A Sunday morning that uses the whole route

The Scarsdale Business Alliance's Destination Scarsdale program has a few Sundays left this season. The calendar runs through Nov. 22. It sets up on Chase Road outside the Scarsdale Post Office, with the farmers market from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and alliance member activities from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Here is one way to string the station blocks onto it:

  1. Start at Dante's Lattes on Christie Place, which opens at 7 a.m.
  2. Walk over to Chase Road for the farmers market and the 9:30 a.m. start of the alliance activities.
  3. Stop by Scarsdale Wine Merchants at 30 East Parkway after it opens at noon on Sunday, and compare it with Scarsdale Wine & Spirits at 1 Christie Place, a block away.
  4. Book Sunday dinner at Capretta on Spencer Place, served until 9:30 p.m., or at One Rare up East Parkway.

Starting Nov. 2, Core Burn's calendar adds a weekday reason to stop at 100 Christie Place.

I've watched storefronts near the Scarsdale station change hands for a long time. This year, new tenants have kept choosing spots right beside businesses like their own.
